The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced that the vision of using an app to summon a self-driving vehicle to take passengers to their destination is now one step nearer.

The company is working to launch an autonomous mobility-on-demand service with a fleet of five to 10 vehicles in Singapore in 2018. Commuters will be able to use a smartphone application to summon a vehicle that will take them from their doorstep to their selected destination, LTA added.
The trial programme at one-north will enable the company to gather insights on and improve the commuter experience of these self-driving vehicles, and allows nuTonomy to expand its fleet progressively in preparation for the launch of its commercial service, it said.
The deal with nuTonomy was one of two partnership agreements LTA inked on Monday to drive the Government's car-lite vision. The other was with Delphi Automotive Systems, which aims to trial and operationalise a fleet of five shared self-driving vehicles with the potential to scale up for such a shuttle service to serve an entire town, it said in its press release.
